FASHION STATEMENT

The huipil featured in Liz Guber’s article about Guatemala [“In Living Colour,” ELLE Escape, January 2015] caught my attention. I, too, travelled to that beautiful country and was entranced by the handwoven fabrics. At first, to my northern eyes, the varied patterns seemed to clash, but after a while my aesthetic sense caught on and I was hooked. Wearing a huipil is a good way to start conversations about Guatemala’s beauty, culture and difficult history, for which I have respect and admiration. JANETTE FECTEAU, ANTIGONISH, N.S.
