Each of the 10 scents in designer Derek Lam’s fragrance debut was inspired by scenes on the cobblestoned street outside his former SoHo studio in New York. “I wanted them to feel very true to what I had experienced,” he explains. Silent St., composed of white musks, captures his impression of the city under a blanket of snow. Looking Glass, with notes of Chinese magnolia and tonka bean, is an appreciation of a woman’s confidence when she looks at herself before a meeting or a date. “There’s always an expectation that [a] designer will eventually do a signature fragrance,” says Lam, whose collection was two years in the making. “I wanted to do something different.” Derek Lam 10 Crosby Fragrance Collection ($115 for each 50 mL bottle)
