I vividly re­mem­ber when the song came on. It was past mid­night. The car win­dows were down, and the sum­mer air was still warm. The road’s dot­ted line was the only break in the Saskatchewan canola fields. And then Jann Ar­den sang: “Or drive your car all night, by just starlight, to Canada. That’s where I’ll be wait­ing.” My sis­ter, my mother and I just looked at one an­other—we knew it was a mo­ment. We started to sing along, and it felt like we were in the only car in the world.
