TIFF’S BIG WINNERS
The TIFF People’s Choice Award, which allows audience members to vote on their favourite films, usually sets the tone for awards season. (Past winners Room, 12 Years a Slave, The King’s Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, Silver Linings Playbook and La La Land all went on to Oscar and Golden Globe-winning glory.) So expect to see the people behind Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which took the prize this year, to take centre stage in 2018.
Other big winners included music video director Joseph Kahn’s battle rap movie Bodied, which beat out James Franco’s The Disaster Artist to win the Midnight Madness award and the Margot Robbie-starring I, Tonya, the first runner-up in the People’s Choice Award category, that’s been generating loads of Oscar buzz thanks to her powerful performance.
