CLASSIC NARDWUAR
We turned the tables on Evaporators frontman and famed interviewer Nardwuar for our Questionnaire and he didn’t disappoint. He claimed his most inspirational gig took place in L.A. to approximately 40 people — one of whom was child actor Robbie Rist, famous primarily for playing Cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch in 1974. “I think of the Evaporators as the Cousin Oliver of rock’n’roll,” Nardwuar said. “You might see or hear of us here and there, but you don’t really know who we are.”
READERS LOVE CLASSIC CANCON
As we have in this issue, we published our 2003 Readers Poll results, and there was a distinct love of CanCon: Weakerthans ( Reconstruction Site); Broken Social Scene (You Forgot It in People); Sam Roberts ( We Were Born in a Flame); New Pornographers ( Electric Version); Constantines ( Shine a Light); the Dears ( No Cities Left); and Joel Plaskett Emergency ( Truthfully, Truthfully) took seven of the ten spots on readers’ favourite pop/rock list, leaving only the White Stripes, Radiohead and the Strokes as non-Canucks.
WONDER WOMEN
Our comics column discussed a new vision for Wonder Woman, downplaying more recent sexed-up trends and returning to her more feminist roots. In this same issue, we reviewed Patty Jenkins’ directorial debut, Monster. Jenkins took that more feminist direction to heart for her 2017 Wonder Woman film. JAMES KEAST
