FUNKOFF WITH THIS
Funko Pops are those bright pop culture toys that your weird cousin keeps on shelves where books should be. So many weird cousins have these damn things that they’re now making a movie about them. The Funko Pop movie will be produced by Warner Bros. and will reportedly feature Darth Vader, Deadpool, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Care Bears and My Little Pony. You know, the opposite of a date movie.
CHUCKY’S NEW JOB
They’re making a Child’s Play TV show, and no we’re not talking about the evening news. The Syfy network recently announced that they had cancelled their anthology horror series Channel Zero, which was certainly bad news. That series was produced by Child’s Play creator Don Mancini, who will stay in business with the company to make Chucky, featuring everyone’s favourite bright-haired, demonic man-baby. Again, not talking about the evening news.
TITANIC 2
The culture is currently obsessed with musical biopics. Up next is the life and times of Céline Dion. The beloved/despised Can-lite power ballad icon will have her life story told in a film called The Power of Love. The movie will hit theatres on December 2, 2020, with French actor Valérie Lemercier set to direct and play Dion.
FYRE AND WATER
There are plenty of problems with Netflix’s Fyre Festival documentary, not least of which is the fact that it was produced by FuckJerry — the same media company that marketed the original Fyre Festival. And while we’ve delighted in event planner Andy King’s transformation into king of the blowjob memes, the comedy community is turning its ire on FuckJerry itself. The company has long acted as a “curator” of comedy; comedians say that’s another word for stealing their work. Vulture’s Megh Wright recently started a #FuckFuckJerry campaign to encourage unfollowing and to raise awareness of their sketchy practices.
JUSTICE FOR JUSSIE
Jussie Smollett, the talented musician and cast member on Empire, was assaulted in a Chicago hate crime last month. According to a statement from the Chicago police, Smollett was beaten by two men who were yelling “racial and homophobic slurs” at him. They proceeded to pour “an unknown chemical substance” on the actor and put a rope around his neck. The actor was hospitalized and described as being in “good condition.” As of press time, no one has been arrested.
