Straight edge in the bud biz

- By Alex Hudson

IF NAKED HAS BEEN STRAIGHT EDGE FOR 25 YEARS, and even though she doesn’t partake in mind-altering substances, she has become a key player in Canada’s post-legalization cannabis community. She’s a strong advocate for non-psychoactive CBD, and she even has her own CBD brand, MonaLisa Healing.

“It is a very positive and healing plant,” she tells Exclaim! “We should all grow it like tomato plants. Cannabis in its various forms should never be stigma

Btized, and I believe it is a valuable supplement for any human or animal.” Prior to going straight edge, the songwriter dabbled in cannabis in her early days. And even though she never embraced the plant quite as enthusiastically as some of her bandmates did, she found that it seemed to make people happy (in contrast to alcohol).

It wasn’t until her battle with breast cancer, years later, that she discovered CBD. “When I was in chemo treatments about a decade ago for breast cancer, I learned about the benefits of CBD oils and tinctures, and witnessed some miraculous results in many of the patients,” she remembers. “It was miraculous in assisting their well-being and supporting their recovery.”

Bif favours tasteless CBD oils, taken orally. She mostly takes it in the morning, but on days when she’s particularly stressed or sore from exercise, she’ll have some before bedtime. She’s a testament to the diversity of Canada’s cannabis scene, proving that there’s a lot more to the plant than the Reefer Madness clichés of old.

She enthuses, “I think this is an amazing time to be alive! Canada’s government has a lot to learn, as the road to legalization has been a bumpy one, but I still think that we are all headed in the right direction.”
