On June 3, Alex Honnold made the first free-solo of El Capitan via the 1,000- metre Freerider 5.13a. His ascent took three hours and 56 minutes and is considered by many to be the greatest solo ever. After his climb, he said, “So stoked to realize a life dream today.” The climb was filmed by Jimmy Chin for an upcoming documentar­y. At the time of print, Marc-Andre Leclerc had climbed a number of new routes in the Ghost River Valley ground-up free-solo. He made the likely first free-solos of Southern Exposure 5.11a 300 m and Mantissa 5.10d 300 m in the Ghost, Cheesmond Express 5.10c 600 m on Ha Ling and Flying Buttress to East Ridge of Mount Deltaform IV 1,500 m. He then Soloed Screams from the Balcony 5.11 150 m at Saddleback and Pinko 5.10 500 m on Rimwall.
