Focus on always improving It doesn’t matter if you just started climbing or if you’re projecting upper 5.13s, there’s something fun and motivating about pushing your upper limit. And your limit will sometimes go up and sometimes go down, but that doesn’t matter. Sometimes you’ll have a year of breakthrou­ghs and the next you’ll suffer from injuries and real life setbacks. But the point is to always be pushing and not being negative about losing a few grades over a season or two. As long as you’re committed to 100 per cent pushing yourself physically and mentally every session then you’ll improve. Grades are kind of arbitrary and should be used as markers that might give you an idea about what a climb is like. If you’re a 5.10 climber
