Mathew Nuqingaq and Tanya Tagaq Awarded Order of Canada
On December 30th, 2016, it was announced that jeweller Mathew Nuqingaq and performer Tanya Tagaq would be appointed Members of the Order of Canada at a ceremony in the spring of 2017. Nuqingaq is the owner of Aayuraa Studio and a leader in his community as an arts educator, a co-founder of the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association and the current Secretary-Treasurer of the Inuit
Art Foundation Board of Directors. Tagaq is a Polaris prize-winning musician, known for her unique style of contemporary throat singing, and is an outspoken advocate for Inuit social and cultural issues. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Order, established in 1967. To mark this significant milestone, the Order announced it would honour 100 new appointees.
