A trip to remember

THUMBS UP

To best friends Angie Arsenault and Chelsea Moulins, who will soon be arriving back on red soil after an epic cross-country adventure that won’t soon be forgotten. The two pals decided at Christmas that they would take two weeks offer work, pack up Arsenault’s Toyota Matrix and, with map in hand, venture across this great land of ours. The duo had a few places they wanted to stop along the way, surprising friends in Ontario, but, otherwise, had no real plan, just a desire to travel from East Coast To West Coast. Their plans raised a few eyebrows from friends and family, with some calling them crazy. And life on the road hasn’t always been easy, since the women were sleeping, most nights, in the back of the ‘Matrix Motel’. But, in speaking to the friends, they said they would do it all again, recounting all their adventures, the memories that they have made and awe-struck by the beauty of this country, which they now say they got to see first hand. Haven’t most of us all wanted to do this, get in a car with our best friend and hit the open road? Now, Arsenault and Moulins can say they did that, and check the cross-Canada road trip off their bucket list. Bravo to them for taking life by the reigns and setting off on such an adventure.

THUMBS DOWN

To Mother Nature and her decision to, although it is spring, to dumping, overnight Saturday, a blanket of snow on the province. And that came after a beautiful early spring day, where many were out enjoying the outdoors, cleaning up their yards, playing and, for many, doing so without the confines of a heavy winter jacket. But, thankfully, the snow was melting quickly under blue skies and the sun on Sunday. Overall, we have had a fairly good winter, with few storms and not near as much snow as last year — and we all remember last winter, which was one for the records books. Let’s hope that the snow that we received on the weekend is the last for the season and, soon, April showers will bring mayflowers.

THUMBS UP

To long-standing Summerside business, Callbeck’s Home Hardware, on its almost $1-million expansion. In these tough economic times many businesses are scaling back operations and, in some cases, closing their doors, sending their employees on the job hunt. It is nice to see that a business, one that has been part of the Island community for more than a century, continue to thrive and grow. The expansion includes a refurbishing of the interior of the store and the construction of a new warehouse. No new jobs are being added just yet, but said owner Ron MacDonald, if business continues to grow there could be new hires in the future. Let’s hope that we see more of this with other companies and that area residents continue to support and buy local.
