The 10th annual Desmond Baglole Scenic Road Run goes Saturday.

Organizers are hoping to attract recreational runners to this unique event. What makes this run unique is the quiet, dirt roads, and the hills make it a challenge. The 15-kilometre course is designed to take runners through some of the beautiful scenic heritage roads in the central part of the Island. Scenic heritage roads are protected dirt roads on Prince Edward Island, characterized by trees that canopy sections of the road.

“Last year, we had lots of positive comments from the runners,” said run organizer Paul Baglole. “Some runners participate in this run every year because of the beautiful and peaceful scenic heritage roads.

“It’s a hilly course, and the dirt roads add something different for runners, who usually run on pavement. They also love the home-made cookies!” Proceeds from the run will be used for a student bursary at Holland College in memory of Desmond Baglole.

The event starts in Millvale at the intersection of Routes 239 and 231 at 9 a.m.

Registration is at the start line in Millvale from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Registration cost is $15, and includes participation in the event, door prizes and refreshments (and cookies) at the finish line. The run will be held rain or shine. Runners enjoy a downhill stretch at the 6 kilometre point of the 2015 Desmond Baglole Scenic Road Run. The Colorado Avalanche have hired Jared Bednar as their new head coach.

Bednar replaces Patrick Roy, who abruptly stepped down as coach and vice-president of hockey operations earlier this month. The 44-year-old Bednar won the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup championship as coach of the Lake Erie Monsters last season. He also won the Canada has chosen Sidney Crosby as its captain for the World Cup of Hockey. Crosby returns as Canada’s captain after wearing the “C” for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He is coming off his second Stanley Cup as captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sakic called Bednar “one of the top up-and-coming coaches in our business”’ and said he fit the profile he wanted after going Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and Montreal Canadiens defenceman Shea Weber will serve as the alternates. Coach Mike Babcock called them “great men who have had unbelievable on-ice success.”

General manager Doug Armstrong said his entire roster is full of leaders but that Crosby, Toews and Weber stood out. “These are three leaders who have demonstrated their ability to win at all levels, and we are looking to them to bring that experience, and their relentless pursuit of excellence, as we come together as a team,” Armstrong said.
