Chevys bounce back

Four Ontario pitchers combine on no-hitter vs. P.E.I.

The Summerside Chevys bounced back in a big way.

After losing 7-2 to Newfoundla­nd and Labrador in their opening game Thursday morning, the Chevys defeated Saskatchew­an 9-4 in an evening game to complete Day 1 of the Baseball Canada national 15under championsh­ip at Queen Elizabeth Park 1-1 (won-lost). Saskatchew­an is also 1-1. The Chevys play twice on Friday against Manitoba at 8:45 a.m., and Nova Scotia at 7 p.m.

Team P.E.I.

Team P.E.I.’s Mid-Isle Mustangs dropped a 15-1 decision to Ontario on Thursday night. P.E.I. faces Quebec in its second game on Friday at 11 a.m.

Chevys 9 Saskatchew­an 4

At the Very Important Volunteer (VIV) Field, the Chevys scored five runs in the top of the first inning, and never looked back. After Noah Duckworth scored on an infield error, Bennett MacArthur connected for a two-run blast to make it 3-0. Justin Caron then scored Eric Anderson with a two-out double, and he later came around to score on an error.

The Chevys, who received hits from seven different players, added two runs in the fourth and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Summerside starter Ben MacDougall pitched one-hit ball over 3 1/3 innings to earn the win. Duckworth, Marcus Gauthier and Alex MacRae finished up in relief. Saskatchew­an got on the board in the fifth, and scored three times in the sixth to close to within 8-4. Duckworth, Gauthier, Ben Thompson, Dylan McCormack and Eric Anderson also contribute­d hits for the Chevys.

Newfoundla­nd and Labrador 7 Chevys 2

Newfoundla­nd and Labrador capitalize­d on two hits, four walks and one hit batter to score four runs in the bottom of the third inning to open up a 5-1 lead. The teams exchanged single runs in the first and fourth innings, and Newfoundla­nd and Labrador closed out the scoring with a single run in the sixth. Winning pitcher Michael Molloy worked five strong innings. His line read two earned runs, five hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. Aaron Clarke pitched hitless ball through the final two innings. McCormack started on the hill for Summerside, and gave up five runs on three hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings while striking out five. Eric Anderson and Nathan Jones each allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings of work. The teams combined to hit three home runs out of the renovated Very Important Volunteer Field. Nathan Jones went deep for the Chevys while Lucas Adams and Daniel Hogarth circled the bases for Newfoundla­nd and Labrador.

Ontario 15 P.E.I. 1

Four Ontario pitchers – Justin Bradt, Stanley Dean, Joshua Blanchard and Ashton Feijo – combined on a no-hitter.

Blanchard (1-3) also had a big game at the plate driving in five runs.

After a scoreless first inning, Ontario scored four runs in the second and third innings, two in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Dylan Noonan scored P.E.I.’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
