Caps sweep Crushers

MHL pre-season games underway

The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals swept a pre-season home-and-home series from the Pictou County Crushers over the weekend.

After pulling out a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday night, the Caps rallied from a 3-1 deficit for a 4-3 road victory on Sunday evening. The Caps, who practise on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, resume their MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) pre-season schedule in Amherst, N.S., against the Ramblers on Wednesday.

At the Pictou County Wellness Centre, Alex McQuaid had a goal and an assist while Jacob Levesque, Marc-Andre Lacouffe and Brodie MacMillan scored for the Capitals. Nathan Yetman, Brodie MacArthur and Cody Grant added assists.

Benji Curtis, Alex Bonaporte and Alexis Roy countered for the Crushers.

The Crushers led 3-2 after the opening period, and the teams went into the second intermissi­on tied 3-3. Kirklin Allen and Matt Williams split the game in goal for the Caps. Allen stopped all 12 shots he faced while Williams turned aside 21 of 24.

At Credit Union Place’s Ice Pad, MacArthur scored at 1:10 of overtime. Sophomore defenceman Jesse Annear and rookie forward TJ Shea set up MacArthur for the game-winning goal. Logan Vanderveld­en and Morgan MacDonald also scored for the Capitals while Jacob Levesque (2), MacArthur and Colton Perry added assists. Michael Dill, who tied the game 2-2 with one second remaining in regulation time, and Ryan Roche replied for the Crushers. The Caps led 1-0 after the first period, and the teams were tied 1-1 following 40 minutes. Allen went the distance in goal for the Capitals, stopping 24 of 26 shots.
