Fun on the farm

Annual Kool Breeze Farms’ Scarecrow Contest goes ahead despite showers

After being postponed a week earlier by poor weather, a few showers on Sunday wouldn’t dampen the enthusiasm and the fun at Kool Breeze Farm’s annual P.E.I. Scarecrow Contest.

Fall festivities were in full swing on Sunday at Kool Breeze Farms’ 10th annual P.E.I. Scarecrow Contest. Margaret Bradley, 74, of Maple Ridge, N.B., attended the competition for the first time and was amazed by what she saw. “I used to have a dairy farm and I thought it’d be nice to come here while I was visiting family,” said Bradley.

“It’s amazing that there is a place like this. So much work has gone into it and it really draws attention to the farming industry on P.E.I.”

Bradley said that visiting a working farm is a great experience for all ages. “A lot of kids know how things are produced. It’s a learning experience for them.” Islander Rachel Cornish and her family attend the annual event each year.

“It’s turned into a family tradition,” added Cornish. “I came to events like this when I was young and we’re passing on the tradition.” For her kids it is an entire afternoon of fun.

“They really like getting the chance to play around and climb up on the farm equipment,” said Cornish.

This year’s P.E.I. Scarecrow Contest was supposed to be held on Sept. 18 as part of the Open Farm Day, but was postponed due to poor weather. The annual event, held each September, features activities and games for all ages, including potato sack races, wagon rides, three-legged races, a bean toss, egg races and a scarecrow contest. Brother and sister duo Ashton and Alex Bernard won the three-legged race. “I didn’t think when we started that we were going to win. I thought we were going to fall,” said seven-year-old Alex.

“I love coming to this every year,” added 10-year-old Ashton. “It’s all for fun and the games are my favourite part.”
