Senior female finalists Burk, Campbell, MacAulay have competed internationally for Canada
A trio of athletes who have represented Canada at international competitions will be celebrated this week.
Amy Burk, Caitlin Campbell and Shannon MacAulay are the finalists for the Bell Aliant Senior Female Athlete of the Year award. The winner will be announced Wednesday during Sport P.E.I.’s
43rd annual awards ceremony at Holland College in Charlottetown.
Here is a look at the nominees:
Amy Burk, goalball
Amy Burk scored 12 of Canada’s 16 goals during the goalball competition at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016.
The captain scored all six goals in Canada’s win over Australia and two of the three in a victory over Ukraine. It was her third Paralympics.
The Charlottetown native helped Canada win the world championship in 2006 and 2011 and finish third in 2015. She was 13 years old when she started competing at the elite level of the sport.
Caitlin Campbell, biathlon
Campbell took a successful 2015 and made 2016 a year to remember.
The 20-year-old Bedeque native became the first female biathlete from P.EI. to be named to a Canadian team and qualified
Caitlin Campbell is a biathlete from Bedeque. for the world junior championships in Romania. During the North American Cup and North American Championship, Campbell combined her strong skiing skills and a sharp eye at the shooting range to earn two gold and five silver medals to be crowned the overall North American champion. Campbell had four fourthplace finishes at Canadian championships.
Shannon MacAulay, hockey
MacAulay was an assistant captain with the Canadian women’s development team that won the Nations Cup in Germany with a 4-3 overtime win over Finland.
She played in all 40 games for the Clarkson Golden Knights and was selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) all-American team. The Mount Herbert native teamed up with Hockey P.E.I. to hold a girls development camp and promotional campaign.
MacAulay is playing for the Brampton Thunder of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
