Gorveatt, Ebbett to represent P.E.I. at nationals in Fredericton

-

P.E.I. Senior Curling Championships were wrapping up at the Charlottetown Curling Complex Monday when Phil Gorveatt’s rink captured the men’s championship.

The Phil Gorveatt and Shelley Ebbett rinks are the P.E.I. Credit Unions provincial senior curling champions. Gorveatt, third stone Kevin Champion, second stone Mike Dillon and lead Mark Butler, who curl out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, defeated the Robert Campbell team from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside 6-5 in an extra end on Sunday to claim the men’s title. Gorveatt, who won two of the three modified tripleknockout sections and would have taken the title with a win in either of two championshipround games, was leading 5-2 after six ends.

But Campbell, third stone John Likely, second stone Mark O’Rourke and lead Rod MacDonald, who needed to win both games of the championship round, scored a triple and stole a deuce to tie the game and force an extra end.

Women

The women’s title was decided on Monday morning as the Bill Hope-coached Ebbett team from Charlottetown and Cornwall doubled Shirley Berry of Cornwall 6-3.

Ebbett, whose teammates are third stone Kim Pippy, second stone Karen Hardy and lead Sandy Hope, were trailing 2-1 at the fourth-end break. However, they quickly pulled ahead in the second half with a two-point fifth end and a steal of two more in the sixth. The teams traded singles in the final two ends, giving Ebbett the 6-3 victory. Other members of the runner-up Berry team are third stone Janice Murdoch, second stone Rebecca Rolfe and lead Hanny MacLeod.

Ebbett had won two sections of the modified triple-knockout draw, and would have taken the title with a win in the first championship-round game on Sunday, but Berry forced a deciding game with a 7-6 extraend win.

The Gorveatt and Ebbett rinks will advance to the 2017 Everest Canadian senior curling championships in Fredericton, N.B., from March 18 to 26.
