Perfect weekend for Hurricanes
Men, women sweep home games in ACAA
It was a perfect weekend for the Holland Hurricanes’ basketball teams.
The men’s and women’s teams went a combined 4-0 (won-lost) after sweeping games against the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday, and the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils on Sunday, at the Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown on Saturday and Sunday. The women’s Hurricanes, winners of 13 straight games, are now 15-1 (won-lost) in regular-season play, and continue to lead the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) standings.
The Holland College men are 10-7, and in fourth place in the ACAA standings.
The Hurricanes return to action this weekend as the men and women host the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement. The women’s game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 4 p.m.
The men then travel to Truro, N.S., for a Sunday matchup versus the Dal AC Rams at 12:30 p.m.
Women
Hurricanes 94 Seawolves 36 Jayla Verney scored 25 points to power the Hurricanes. Other double-digit scorers were Keia Beals (15), Kendra Craswell (12) and Chelsea Slawter-Wright (10).
Cassie Cooke had 12 rebounds while Darcy Zinck nabbed 10 for the Hurricanes, who held quarter leads of 27-5, 47-20 and 72-28.
Megan Baisley (9) was UNBSJ’s top scorer. Hurricanes 74 Blue Devils 38 Tyleigha Nelson’s 15 points sparked Holland College. Verney had another strong game scoring 13, with Cooke contributing 13 assists and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Mallory Thomas (7) was the Blue Devils’ leading point-getter.
The Hurricanes led 25-6 after the first quarter, 43-14 at half
and 60-28 after the third.
Men
Hurricanes 98 Seawolves 84 A strong third quarter opened up some breathing room for Holland College in a tight matchup with UNBSJ. The Hurricanes led 22-16, 43-40 and 74-61 after each of the first three quarters. Roosevelt Whyley (23) and Trenity Burdine (20), who completed the double-double with 14 boards, were the leading offensive performers for Holland College. Abel Joseph (18), Tevin Bailey (14) and Travis Adams (11) also scored in double digits for Holland College. Hunter Gray had a game-high 26 points for UNBSJ.
Hurricanes 109 Blue Devils 86
Burdine paced the Hurricanes with 19 points while Adams and Joseph finished with 15 each. Other top scorers were Chidi Majok (14) and Whyley (13) and Michael Kayeye (11). Joseph added 10 rebounds to record the Hurricanes’ only double-double of the game. Justin Bhangoo’s 20 points paced UKC.
A 24-16 first quarter lead turned into a 55-29 halftime lead for the Hurricanes. They also finished the third quarter ahead by the score of 84-54.
