Perry, Gallant, Thususka record two points as Kensington wins for eighth time in 10 games
Kensington Wild clinches third place in major midget hockey league.
It’s been a long road back for the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild.
The Wild, with 13 first-year players in the New Brunswick/ P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League, recorded a 4-1 road win over the Miramichi Rivermen on Wednesday night to clinch third place in the regular season.
The rebuilding Wild, who went through a stretch of losing eight of nine games and 11 of 14 from Oct. 29 to Dec. 26, has rebounded to win eight of 10 games in 2017, and now sports a record of 15-15-3 (won-lostovertime losses). Kensington, which won the league’s 2015-16 regularseason title, closes out its schedule with back-to-back games in Fredericton against the Caps (13-19-0) on Saturday and Sunday.
The Wild will then face the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride (12-21-2) in the best-ofseven provincial championship series to determine P.E.I.’s representative at the Atlantic championship in April. Game 1 is expected to be played at Community Gardens in Kensington on Saturday, March 4.
Two points
At the Lord Beaverbrook Rink, Coleton Perry and Evan Gallant each had a goal and an assist while Zach Thususka contributed two helpers to lead the Wild’s offence.
Captain Tayler Read and Ryan Richards also lit the lamp while Clark Webster and Charlie DesRoches drew assists. Walker Campbell netted the lone goal for Miramichi (7-217), which trailed 1-0 after one period and 2-1 following 40 minutes.
Wild goaltender Caleb Coyle stopped 24 of 25 shots directed his way to earn the win. Daniel Moody was tested 39 times in the Rivermen goal.
