Matrix to meet Pownal in midget AAA semifinals

One semifinal matchup in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League was determined on Thursday night.

The second-place Mid-Isle Matrix defeated the SherwoodPa­rkdale Falcons 9-1 to sweep the best-of-five quarter-final series in three straight games. The Matrix will now meet the third-place Pownal Red Devils in the best-of-five semifinal series. The date of the opening game has not yet been announced.

The other semifinal pairing will feature the first-place Western Regals from Alberton taking on the winner of the best-of-five quarter-final series between the Summerside Capitals and Charlottet­own Abbies. The Caps took a 2-1 lead into Game 4 at Credit Union Place in Summerside on Friday night.

At the Cody Banks Arena, Riley Payne (2-1), Zac MacKay (2-1), Nick Trainor (2), Zach Wilson (1-2), David Sato and Joel Rogerson provided goals for the Matrix in the seriesclin­ching win. Brett MacDonald, Kyler Weeks, Morgan Darbyson, Chandler LaPorte and Ben Peters added single helpers.

Nicolas Brown, assisted by Luke Dillon and Emmett Lyons, netted the Falcons’ lone goal. The Matrix held period leads of 1-0 and 4-0. Winning goaltender was Jean-Luc Duguay.
