Western Capitals player gifts little girl skates after meeting on the ice

- BY MILLICENT MCKAY TC MEDIA

Summerside Western Caps defenceman Sebastien Cormier met a little girl at a family skate recently and decided to do something nice for her.

For Sebastien Cormier, giving is better than receiving.

“I grew up on that belief, so when I met Presley it was the perfect opportunity to give back,” said Cormier, a defenceman for the Summerside Western Capitals. Recently, Cormier and his teammates participated in a free family skate in Summerside. While he and the other players were skating around the ice, Cormier saw a five-year-old girl slowly making her way around the ice.

“I kinda went up behind her and held her up as we went around the ice. She was by herself on the ice, so I wanted to help her skate.

“I could tell the entire time she was really enjoying it and laughing a lot.”

After skating with her, Cormier learned her name was Presley and that she was there with her godmother. “At one point while we were skating I noticed that she wasn’t wearing an actual pair of skates but instead the little blades that you can clip on for a training tool.”

That’s when, on his way home from the event, Cormier decided he would buy the little girl a pair of her own skates.

“I have never shopped for a pair of skates for a little girl before. So I texted a family member and asked them what their five-year-old wears and was able to try to find the right size from there.”

On Saturday, Cormier will meet with Presley and her family to present her with her skates. “I’ve spoken with her mom and let them know I have a pair skates for her. Apparently she still talks about us skating together, which is really neat. It puts a special smile on your face when you are part of making a little kid smile.

“I hope when I see her and give her the skates, I see the same smile she had when we were skating around.”
