PEISAA senior AA titles decided

Bluefield Team One, Grace Christian take home championsh­ip banners

The P.E.I. School Athletic Associatio­n senior AA basketball championsh­ip banners will hang at Bluefield and Grace Christian for the next year.

The Grace Christian girls defeated Bluefield 46-40 in the gold-medal game, and Bluefield claimed the boys’ final 58-43 over Souris.

The Souris Spartans defeated the Montague Vikings 38-33 in the girls’ bronze-medal game, and the Charlottet­own Rural Raiders topped Montague 77-58 in the boys’ third-place game. All four medal games were played at Holland College on Monday.

Isaac Cheverie, who was named the most valuable player of the provincial championsh­ip tournament, sank a game-high 22 points to lead the Bobcats. Aike Wilting and Matthew

Meenick each added 12.

Josh McIntosh’s 19-point effort was tops for the Spartans, who received 16 points and 11 boards from Luke Chaisson. Ryan Acorn contribute­d 17 rebounds.

Bluefield held quarter leads of 15-8, 27-23 and 38-32.

Grace Christian 46 Bluefield 40

Grace Christian jumped out to an early 10-2 lead en route to holding quarter leads of 15-7, 24-15 and 32-29.

Alexa Rancourt scored on a driving layup with 1:41 to go, and a clutch foul shot by Danielle McGonnell with 37 seconds remaining sealed the win. McGonnell (18), Zoe Good (10) and Rancourt (9) were the top point-getters for Grace Christian. Rancourt, who contribute­d nine rebounds, was named the provincial championsh­ip tournament’s most valuable player.

Abby MacDonald (16) and Haley Cole (12) were Bluefield’s top scorers.

Souris 38 Montague 33

Montague led 19-12 at halftime, but a basket and two foul shots by Jasmine Laybolt gave the Spartans their first lead since the opening minute 24-23 at the end of the third quarter. A seven-point run, keyed by a three-pointer from Carrsyn Haley, gave the Vikings a 30-27 advantage.

A three-point play by Laybolt and a hoop by Bailee Ford put Souris in front 33-30 with 2:49 to play.

Laybolt (15) and Ford (12) were the top scorers for Souris. Savannah Vandenberg and Haley each had eight points for Montague.

Rural Team Two 77 Montague 58

Kobee Ingersoil scored a game-high 27 points to lead Rural, which built quarter leads of 18-14, 33-28 and 55-40. Jamaal Scott added 21 points and 13 boards while Donovan Ching added 13 points. Connor Kirkland contribute­d 15 rebounds, including six offensive boards.

For Montague, Ross Power (23) and Dyllin Bernard (14) were the top scorers.
