Shaw, Schut rinks win under-16 titles

-

Charlottetown’s Katie Shaw rink stole its way to the P.E.I. Curling Association’s under 16 girls’ provincial championship at the Western Community Curling Club on Sunday evening.

Shaw stole a single point in the eighth end, and another in the extra end, to edge the Alexis Burris team 7-6 in the championship game.

In a battle of Cornwall rinks, Burris had stolen two points in the extra end of her semifinal for an 8-6 win over previously-unbeaten Rachel MacLean. Shaw earned her ticket to the final with a 13-3 victory over Cornwall’s Lauren Ferguson.

There were six teams vying for the girls’ title.

Boys

The boys’ placings were decided by the standings at the end of a three-team double knockout with no playoff.

The defending-champion Mitchell Schut rink from Cornwall lost his first game of the round robin 4-3 to clubmate Chase MacMillan, before reeling off three consecutive wins. Schut and his Nancy Yeo-coached rink of Colin MacKenzie, Michael MacEwen, Liam Kelly and Nick Johnston finished the round robin with an 8-3 win over the Cruz Pineau rink from the Silver Fox.

That left MacMillan and Pineau at 1-2 (won-lost), and needing to play in the final draw to decide second place. MacMillan prevailed 6-4.

Other members of MacMillan’s rink are Liam Barbrick, Davis Nicholson and Jack MacFadyen. Their coach is Rob Roberts.

Rounding out the Katie Shaw rink are Amy Spence, Lexie Murray, Grace Bulger and coach Leigh Gustafson.

The girls’ runner-up rink is comprised of Burris, Sydney Howatt, Megan Sherren, Madelyn Cantwell and coach A.J. Campbell.

Carl Nicholson, coach of the Rachel MacLean rink, won the championship’s coaching award. Sportsmanship awards went to Brayden Show from the Cruz Pineau rink, and Beth Walsh from Clara Jack’s Cornwall rink.
