Casey splits games at Brier
Saskatchewan rink taking 5-4 record into Thursday’s action
The Adam Casey rink split two games at the 2017 Tim Hortons Brier on Wednesday. Casey, who is skipping the Saskatchewan representative at the Canadian men’s curling championship, counted a single point in the 10th end to edge Nova Scotia’s Jamie Murphy 8-7 in the morning draw, and then lost by an identical score to Team Canada’s Kevin Koe in the afternoon draw.
Casey, a Seven Mile Bay native, will take a 5-4 (won-lost) record into Thursday morning’s game against Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs (6-3) in a game that will be televised live on The Sports Network (TSN) at 9:30 a.m. The Saskatchewan team will then play British Columbia’s John Morris in the evening draw.
After falling behind 6-2 after six ends, Casey outscored Koe 5-2 over the final four ends to come up just short in a comeback attempt.
Against Nova Scotia, Casey, third stone Catlin Schneider, second stone Shaun Meachem and lead Dustin Kidby jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three ends. Nova Scotia answered back tying the game 4-4 at the fifth-end break.
Casey took a 6-4 lead in the sixth end, the teams exchanged single points over the next two ends and Murphy scored a deuce in the ninth end to even the score. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Brad Gushue pulled out a 5-4 extra-end win against British Columbia’s John Morris on Wednesday afternoon. Brett Gallant of Charlottetown plays second stone for Gushue. The Gushue rink defeated Quebec’s Jean-Michel Ménard’s rink 7-3 in a battle of 5-2 teams on Wednesday night. Gushue will face Ontario’s Glenn Howard (3-5) and Team Canada’s Kevin Koe (6-2) on Thursday.
