Casey splits games at Brier

Saskatchew­an rink taking 5-4 record into Thursday’s action

The Adam Casey rink split two games at the 2017 Tim Hortons Brier on Wednesday. Casey, who is skipping the Saskatchew­an representa­tive at the Canadian men’s curling championsh­ip, counted a single point in the 10th end to edge Nova Scotia’s Jamie Murphy 8-7 in the morning draw, and then lost by an identical score to Team Canada’s Kevin Koe in the afternoon draw.

Casey, a Seven Mile Bay native, will take a 5-4 (won-lost) record into Thursday morning’s game against Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs (6-3) in a game that will be televised live on The Sports Network (TSN) at 9:30 a.m. The Saskatchew­an team will then play British Columbia’s John Morris in the evening draw.

After falling behind 6-2 after six ends, Casey outscored Koe 5-2 over the final four ends to come up just short in a comeback attempt.

Against Nova Scotia, Casey, third stone Catlin Schneider, second stone Shaun Meachem and lead Dustin Kidby jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three ends. Nova Scotia answered back tying the game 4-4 at the fifth-end break.

Casey took a 6-4 lead in the sixth end, the teams exchanged single points over the next two ends and Murphy scored a deuce in the ninth end to even the score. Newfoundla­nd and Labrador’s Brad Gushue pulled out a 5-4 extra-end win against British Columbia’s John Morris on Wednesday afternoon. Brett Gallant of Charlottet­own plays second stone for Gushue. The Gushue rink defeated Quebec’s Jean-Michel Ménard’s rink 7-3 in a battle of 5-2 teams on Wednesday night. Gushue will face Ontario’s Glenn Howard (3-5) and Team Canada’s Kevin Koe (6-2) on Thursday.
