Robbery gone awry at St. Roch home

Young Summerside man sentenced for his part in attempted theft

An 18- year- old Summerside man has been sentenced to two years less a day in jail for his part in the botched robbery of a home in St. Roch.

Dylan Cameron MacIsaac pleaded guilty on Dec. 15, 2016, and was sentenced on Feb. 28, 2017. He has no previous adult record.

The incident took place on Sept. 26, 2016. MacIsaac pleaded guilty to robbery.

RCMP later said it was lucky no one was killed in the incident.

According to the facts presented in court, MacIsaac, along with four others, travelled from Charlottetown to St. Roch on the night in question after the organizer of the robbery, Riley Dai Callin, 19, asked him to participate. Callin told MacIsaac that the trip was to collect on a drug debt. MacIsaac later told police that he didn’t understand the plan to recover the money involved violence until he was already in the car with the others and they were on their way. At that point, he said, he didn’t know how to get out of the situation.

When the group arrived at their destination they were welcomed into the home by the occupant, Dylan Chaisson, 24, who showed them a sawedoff shotgun he said was loaded. There were large quantities of cocaine and marijuana on the coffee table. MacIsaac and Callin were in the home for a while and were texting each other regarding the best way to disarm Chaisson.

Callin wanted MacIsaac to grab Chaisson and hold him while Callin got the gun. MacIsaac instead decided to distract him by showing him pictures on his phone. When Callin made a play for the gun he couldn’t get it away from Chaisson and he and MacIsaac were injured in the resulting scuffle. The men ran but Callin got to the waiting car first and it sped off, leaving MacIsaac behind.

The two men exchanged more texts but Callin refused to come back for MacIsaac, saying he’d been no help in the house.

MacIsaac threatened to call police if the car didn’t come back for him and did so shortly thereafter.

Callin pleaded guilty to the charges against him in December and was sentenced to 42 months in jail.

Chaisson was charged with assault, threats and weapons charges. Others in Callin’s group who were charged include Coady Veilleux, Pamela Johnston and Lucas Groves, who were 19, 20 and 22 years old when they were charged.
