No decision yet on pig scramble in Dundas

-

The co-president of the Dundas Plowing Match and Agricultural Fair says no decision has been made about the future of the pig scramble.

“We’re going to meet as a board, and whenever we do then we’ll know what’s going on,’’ Gordon Jackson said Tuesday.

The Guardian ran a story in Tuesday’s newspaper in which a New Brunswick woman said she has launched an online petition to have the pig scramble cancelled at the fair. Jackson couldn’t be reached for comment on Monday, but he returned The Guardian’s call on Tuesday morning. Melodie Robb has launched an online petition at change. org, calling pig scrambles inhumane. Her work with other animal rights activists, including a large group called Toronto Pig Save, has led to the cancellation of other pig scrambles in the Maritimes.

The Westmorland County Fair in Petitcodiac, N.B., cancelled its pig scramble due to complaints from animal activists.

The Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition in Truro also called off its event.

Jackson said while a discussion will be held with its board, other talks are ongoing as well.

“We’re (also) in discussion with the Department of Agriculture,’’ Jackson said.

The department’s responsibilities would include ensuring the animals are being treated humanely.
