Community members recognized for going above and beyond for Summerside

- BY MILLICENT MCKAY

Several Summerside citizens and one neighbour were recognized for their volunteerism and contribution to their community on Thursday night at the Summerside Annual Awards Gala.

It was an Oscar-like moment for Belinda Woods and Elma Noye.

“It’s so much heavier than you think,” the two agreed holding their shiny new awards. The two, along with several others, were recognized Thursday night at the Summerside Annual Awards Gala. Woods was the recipient of the Good Neighbour of the Year (for non-residents) award, while Noye was named Volunteer of the Year.

“I was a nervous wreck. I’m not one to get up and speak in front of a crowd. I’d rather take part and do something,” said Noye.

“I was surprised when I found out that I had been nominated. And I was even more surprised when Joanne called me and told me I had been selected. I told her ‘I don’t believe you. I’m going to hang up on you,’” said Noye with a chuckle. Woods was just as surprised. “I didn’t really realize that people paid attention to what I do. I’ve always tried to stay out of the spotlight. I’d rather be behind the scenes and help,” Woods said.

For years, Woods has worked behind the scenes, currently at the P.E.I. Association for Newcomers, as well as working with various organizations like Justice Options for Women in West Prince and the Lest We Forget Committee.

More recently, she started The Free Store in downtown Summerside, run by the community for the community.

“I know what it’s like to go without.

“But I feel like I have such a blessed life now, so it’s my turn to give back and pay it forward,” said Woods.

Noye, a recent retiree after working 20 years in a manor,

still visits residents who have little family contact.

She has been involved with the Summerside Legion for 36 years, working as the executive in charge of entertainment, special events and chair of the Legion Literacy and Poster contest for school children.

She has also volunteered with numerous other groups like the Alzheimer’s Society of P.E.I.,

Kidney Foundation, Meals on Wheels and Kinsmen Christmas Hamper program.

“I have a few health concerns, but volunteering everyday is the reason I get out of bed. I just want to help others,” said Noye. Other award winners include: – Roger Gallant, Good Neighbour of the Year award for residents

– Vector Aerospace, Community

Business of the Year – Meals on Wheels, Volunteer Service Organization of the Year

– Trinity Good News Crew, Youth of the Year

– George Dalton, Senior of the Year

– Duncan McKillop, Citizen of the Year
