KRHS WINS GOLD & SILVER AT SKILLS

Congratula­tions to Grade 12 students Alex Phillips and Nick Henderson for winning gold in robotics at the 2017 P.E.I. Provincial Skills Canada Competitio­n on March 7. Congratula­tions as well to KRHS students Evan Dawson and Julie Robinson for winning silver in Robotics and to Kegan Bernard who had a strong showing in the Automotive competitio­n. Thanks to teacher advisor Ryan McAleer.

As gold medalists, Alex and Nick will now represent their province at the National Skills Canada Competitio­n in Winnipeg, Man., from May 31-June 3.

SUPERPOWER YOUR SCHOOL

Two P.E.I. schools have made it to the finals of the Superpower Your School contest. It’s a national contest, looking for what they call “ecovaters” — schools that help the environmen­t through green projects. Kinkora Regional High School and Three Oaks Senior High made it to the top 10 finalists in the Atlantic region, meaning they could win a $25,000 prize package of innovative technology for their school.

The contest is sponsored by Staples stores, and promoted by Earth Day Canada. Ten winning schools from across Canada will be announced in April.

VIMY 2017

This year marks the 100th year since the Battle at Vimy Ridge.

There will be 20 KRHS students and three staff members attending the commemorat­ion ceremony at the Vimy Ridge monument on April 9. As well, students will be visiting London, Normandy (Juno Beach), Beaumont Hamel (Battle of the Somme), and Paris.

EF CANADIAN YOUTH AMBASSADOR

Grade 12 KRHS student Olivia Mullins was one of 30 students selected from 1,300 across Canada to be part of the EF Canadian Youth Ambassador Program.

She will be travelling to France from April 6-12 to participat­e in the commemorat­ion ceremony of the 100th anniversar­y of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Then in May, Olivia will join peers from across Canada for an EF Educationa­l Tour to Ottawa.

BLAZER HOCKEY IS BACK

High School Hockey will be taking place from April 3 to 8. Both boys and girls teams performed well in the last few years and there are sure to be exciting games again. Here is the schedule:

Monday in Kensington: KRHS Girls vs. Bluefield at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in Kensington: KRHS Boys vs. Bluefield at 8:30 p.m. Girls vs. TOSH at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday in Pownal: Boys vs Rural at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Kensington: Girls vs. Colonel Gray at 5:30 p.m.

Thursday - Crossovers. Saturday: Championsh­ip games in Kensington at 1 p.m. for girls and 2:20 p.m. for boys.

ENCOUNTERS WITH CANADA

Grade 12 student Alex Phillips will be representi­ng KRHS at Encounters with Canada at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa from April 2-8. The theme of his week is Vimy: Canada’s Coming of Age.

Alex won his all-expense paid trip through the Canadian Parents for French Student Excellence Award program.

2017 GRAD NEWS

The grads selected Grade 12 student Bailey Dawson as their 2017 valedictor­ian.

For the March grad activity, the grads enjoyed Casino Night on March 7.

On March 30, the Grads attended an Island Storm basketball game as special guests.

The grad class is looking for parents interested in hosting the annual grad barbecue after the last final exam in June as well as the annual grad breakfast on the morning of graduation (June 22).
