Student reaching new heights with first official Miscouche community flag

Isabelle McCarville, a student at Miscouche Consolidated School, came up with the winning design for Miscouche’s first flag.

In the year Miscouche marks its 200th anniversary, the community’s first flag will be raised above the Recreation Centre.

Designed by a local student, this special flag-raising will kick-start the celebrations and officially release the new flag on July 1.

Isabelle McCarville, 13, of Miscouche Consolidated School, couldn’t believe her luck when she made history with her drawing.

“I’m surprised because I was almost 100 per cent sure I would not win the Miscouche Community Flag Design contest,” said McCarville. “I was not even going to enter the competition, but then a teacher persuaded me.”

McCarville’s design features the provincial flower of the Island, a Lady Slipper, St. John the Baptist Church, and a tree. “We’re very excited to have a community flag from here on in,” said Miscouche Fire

Department Chief Jason Woodbury. “We were pleased with the amount of entries, but unfortunately we could only

choose one winner.” McCarville was presented with a cheque of $1,000 as part of the winning prize. The community now has the rights to the design, and minor tweaks are being made to the flag design before its unveiling.

Christina McCarville is trying to get adjusted to her daughter’s new place in their community’s history.

“We’re very proud, and this is really something we have not quite wrapped our heads around, because you don’t expect your child to come home from school and say, guess what? I won this huge competition and now I’m going to have this thing that’s essentially part of this community forever.” Silver Maple Seniors Club members: James Gaudet, Auldine Arsenault, Estelle Desroches, Julia Albert and Thelma Gaudet, have complied a history book that includes Isabelle’s flag design and description.

The book that highlights the past and present Miscouche, will be launched the same day the flag is raised.

After the official ceremony, the flag will be flown in front of the Miscouche Community Office on Main Drive.
