Kensington girls win Tier 1 provincial title

The Kensington Crusaders completed the 2017 volleyball season with a perfect 4-0 record.

The Kensington Crusaders completed the 2017 season in convincing fashion.

The Crusaders continued their winning ways as the tough-serving and hard-hitting team posted a perfect 4-0 (won-lost) record en route to winning the Volleyball P.E.I. 18-Under Tier 1 Spring League provincial championsh­ip at Kensington Intermedia­te-Senior High School on Tuesday night.

The Richard Younkercoa­ched Crusaders were at the top of their game in the season-ending final match – a 25-18 triumph over their season rivals Rural Red from Charlottet­own. Rural Red’s only loss in round-robin play was at the hands of the Crusaders.

Bronze-medal match

In a thrilling bronze-medal match, the Summerside Suns

fought off a charge by the Central Colonels of Charlottet­own to win by two points – 25-23. The two city teams came into the provincial­s in fourth and fifth place, but played tough in the round robin to secure a place in a medal match. The league also announced its all-stars during the provincial championsh­ip awards presentati­ons. Jillian Ferguson, Kensington Crusaders; Amanda MacBain, Central Colonels; Megan McCarron, Rural Red, and Callie MacDonald, Summerside Suns, and Nellie Wood, Red Mudd, were recognized with all-star awards.
