Expo for West Prince has faithful following
Even the planning meetings are fun
There are a lot of familiar faces around the table during planning meetings for the annual West Prince Seniors Expos.
Jean Balsom, who has been part of the organizing committee for 15 years, explains why: “It’s nice to see people so happy,” she says. Seniors from across the Island start arriving at the Mill River resort around 11:30 in the morning even though the annual program doesn’t get started until 1 p.m.
It’s a fun time, agrees Shirley Murphy, the chair of this year’s Expo, the 28th. Cletus Dunn has been a member of the organizing committee since the start and Wanda Adams joined in 1997, the year she retired. The Expo chairman that year, Gerarda Corcoran, invited Adams to get involved. She subsequently served terms as chairwoman. Katherine Boulter joined the committee when she moved to West Prince and found it a good way to meet new people. She’s been involved ever since and is actively selling tickets to this year’s event, which will be held June 6. Committee members are taking care of ticket sales, and only 200 are being sold.
Joining Murphy, Adams, Balsom, Dunn and Boulter on the committee are Priscilla Dominque, Alfred DesRoches, Theresa Doucette, Phyllis Porter and John and Jean Hagen.
With this being Canada’s sesquicentennial – 150th – anniversary – coming up with an Expo theme was easy, committee members admit. It’s “Celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.”
The program starts at 1 p.m. and closes with a meal at 5:30 p.m.
A fun-filled afternoon is planned, including activity sessions, door prizes and lots of entertainment. Entertainers include: Everett Boulter and Friends, Wanda Dunbar and Lloyd Buchanan, Alphy Perry and Stephen Perry, Dennis King, Wes MacAleer and Roy MacCaull.
