More than 950 graduate
Valedictorian says she failed a lot in her life
UPEI graduate Foyin Senbanjo knows that getting lost is sometimes the best way to figure out where you’re going. During her valedictory address at UPEI’s morning convocation ceremony on Saturday, Senbanjo was not shy in talking about the adversity she faced when first arriving at the school.
Senbanjo, who is originally from Lagos, Nigeria, first came to UPEI as an international student when she was 16-yearsold.
“Every terrible thing you can ever imagine happened to me. I didn’t excel at school, I didn’t have a social life or job…. Honestly, I failed, a lot. And I didn’t fit in anywhere,” said Senbanjo, who eventually found herself and later began working in the school’s International Relations office.
“That phase of my life helped me to understand myself. Every time I lost, and every time I failed, I gained knowledge. So I learned that it’s okay to fall. Because sometimes it’s the best way to figure out where you’re going.”
Senbanjo’s family from Nigeria was in attendance as she crossed the stage to receive her Bachelor of Business Administration — Co-operative Education during UPEI’s convocation ceremonies Saturday.
She was one of more than 950 graduates who entered the next journey of their lives during the ceremonies at Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre.
President Alaa Abd-El-Aziz congratulated graduates and said they were moving onto their next journey during a “time of great hope and possibility for Canada’s future.” “I know you have bold ideas and aspirations for what Canada can be. And while you sit here today, you may have a very specific plan for what is to come next,” said Abd-El-Aziz. “However, the wonderful thing about this journey that we are all on is that throughout the various twists and turns of life, you may end up somewhere very different, and even better, than what you envision today.” The university also conferred honorary doctor of law degrees on four recipients; aboriginal leader Judy Clark, P.E.I. business leader Stan MacPherson,
Saint Dunstan’s University alumnus and business owner Allan Curran and Elizabeth Epperly, who was the first woman president and vice-chancellor of UPEI.
The ceremony also saw chancellor Don McDougall confer the title of professor emeritus on Tim Ogilvie, a founding faculty member and former dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College.
UPEI’s first ever librarian emerita title was also bestowed, in absentia, to longtime Robertson Library librarian and past-president of the UPEI Faculty Association Betty Jeffery.
Lief Wilm, who graduated with a bachelor of science (honours) in mathematics, provided the afternoon
valedictory address. Senbanjo, who now plans on staying in P.E.I. and will start a new job at DeltaWare this week, urged her fellow graduates to “create the world you want to live in.”
“Be active, be the light, be radical, leave your mark, be the fire. We have a responsibility to carter for our community, for the less privileged, for the poor,” said Senbanjo.
“In the words of my favourite rapper J. Cole ‘the only real change comes from inside.’ From inside our communities, from inside our families, from inside our hearts. That’s the only way we can make the world a better place.”
