Grand River native named TOSH student-athlete of the month
It has been a very busy and successful senior year at Three Oaks Senior High School for Kelsey MacKinnon of Grand River. The 18-year-old from Grand River has worn her school’s green and gold colours in four different P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) senior sports. She was recently selected as the student-athlete of the month at Three Oaks.
Kelsey MacKinnon has been a key contributor and leader in all four P.E.I. School Athletic Association sports she has competed in during her senior year.
As a result, the 18-year-old daughter of Nelson and Nancy MacKinnon of Grand River has been chosen as the Greco Pizza/ Capt. Sub student-athlete of the month at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside. Garth Turtle, who coached MacKinnon in basketball at Three Oaks, explained the value she brings to her teams and teammates.
“Kelsey is a coach’s dream,” emphasized Turtle. “A hard worker in practice and games, Kelsey is always striving to improve her game.
“Kelsey is a great leader who puts the concerns of her teammates before her own. She loves to compete, and plays her best when
the team needs her the most.”
Key roles
Kelsey played key roles in helping the Axewomen earn silver medals provincially in both senior AAA soccer and basketball. She played defence in soccer and forward in basketball.
Kelsey also enjoyed tremendous success on the badminton court. She claimed silver in senior singles, and teamed with Keirstyn Hamlin to win gold in doubles.
Currently, Kelsey is a member of the Three Oaks senior AAA rugby team, and her position is standoff.
Kelsey is also very active in school life at Three Oaks as she is vice-president of the athletic council and a member of the student leadership. She is also involved in organizing the Three Oaks Relay for Life event.
“Kelsey is always willing to do what needs to be done, and is a really big help around the gym,” noted Three Oaks athletic director Joel Arsenault. Following graduation from high school in June, Kelsey plans to study science at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., and pursue a career in a medical field. Kelsey also hopes to continue playing rugby.
