Kinkora construction company uses social media to track stolen copper

- BY COLIN MACLEAN

The owner of a Kinkora-based construction company is especially thankful today for the existence of social media. Robert Duffy, owner and president of Duffy Construction, lost more than $10,000 in copper material earlier this week from a portable storage unit on a construction site in Winsloe, at the intersection of Malpeque and Sherwood roads.

Frustrated with the loss, Duffy’s company issued a statement with details about the theft on social media and offered a reward for information.

In less than 24 hours the post had been shared more than 1,200 times and resulted in numerous tips. Charlottetown Police are currently investigating the theft and are still calling for tips to be passed along to them at 902-629-4172.

“I’m very pleased, just simply because there is people that do care out there. There’s people who are fed up with this stealing going on,” Duffy said Thursday.

“The other day I didn’t care if I had to pay (out) exactly what I lost, I wanted to catch these guys and send a message out there to these thieves; that with social media, and Facebook, and the thousands of people who are fed up with thieves – you will get caught.”
