Runs hard to come by

Charlottet­own scores once in doublehead­er loss to Saint John

The Charlottet­own Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders offence continues to sputter early in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League season.

They scored a run on seven hits on Saturday as the Saint John Alpines swept a doublehead­er at Memorial Field. The Alpines won 4-1 and 1-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season while the Islanders fall to 1-4. Charlottet­own has been shutout twice and scored one run in two other games this season. Jack Shannon one-hit the Islanders in Game 2 on Saturday to complete the sweep.

Brady Arsenault’s single was the lone blemish on his complete game effort that included 11 strikeouts and no walks. Dawson Griffin had a double and scored in the third inning for Saint John. Adam Clark had a triple while Ryan Owens and Ryan Van Snick added singles. Brody McDonald took the loss, giving up a run on two hits in four innings of work. He struck out five and walked two. Arsenault allowed two hits in three innings of relief while striking out four and walking two.

Islanders right-hander Jordan Stevenson cruised through the first four innings in the opening game before running into trouble in the fifth.

Ron Barton drew a one-out walk before Stevenson struck Mark Legere out. The Alpines then had consecutiv­e singles by Scott May, Van Snick, Clark and Owens to make it 2-0 Saint John. Devin Thomas followed with a two-run double to double the score in the hit-around fifth inning.

The Islanders threatened early in the game, having two runners on in three of the first four innings, but were unable to cash.

They got on the board in the sixth inning when Ryne MacIsaac scored Cole MacLaren from third base on a 4-6-3 double play.

Brooks Saunders picked up the win with four innings of relief. He allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

Saint John starter Shaun O’Toole allowed two hits in three shutout innings. Stevenson was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out five and walked one. Colin Arsenault gave up three hits and hit two batters in two innings of work. Van Snick was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run while Owens was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Barton and Mark Phillips each added a single for Saint John. Arsenault was 2-for-3 for the Islanders while Taylor Larkin and McDonald each had doubles. Jesse MacIntyre and Josh McKinnon added singles in the loss. Charlottet­own travels to Fredericto­n, N.B., Saturday to play a doublehead­er with the Royals beginning at 4 p.m.
