- BY NICHOLAS OAKES

A late rally turned into a huge upset in the Saturday night feature at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. Narragansett was the longest shot on the board, but delivered late in the mile to win in 1:56.2 for trainer-driver Jason Hughes and owner Foxyhall Racing of Nova Scotia.

The eight-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover sat the pylons as Elm Grove Kaboom (Earl Smith) laid down frontend fractions of 28.3, 58.3 and 1:27.1 while fighting off the first over advance of heavy posttime favourite Eagle Jolt (Marc Campbell).

Hughes got up in the final strides with the 22-1 Narragansett while Elm Grove Kaboom was second and Likely To Win (Adam Merner) was third. Narragansett rewarded his backers with $46.80 on a $2 ticket while the 2-3-1 triactor paid $289.40. Ashes To Ashes scored the fastest mile of the night as the three-year-old son of Driven To Win won in a blistering 1:55.2 with Gilles Barrieau in the bike for trainer Jackie Matheson and owners Linda Somers of Cornwall, Alan Conway of Summerside and Lynn Livingstone of Kensington.

Three wins

Campbell had another large night in the race bike winning three races on the program, including visits to the winner’s circle with Zero Rate in 1:59.3 for Michael Gallant of Charlottetown; Sandinista in 1:59.1 for Clair Sweet of O’Leary, and Howmacs Dragonator in 1:59.1 for trainer Earl Watts of Hampshire.

Hughes had a training and driving double on the program while Matheson also had two wins as a trainer.

Live racing continues at Red Shores Charlottetown on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday at 6 p.m., with the eliminations of the Maritime Breeders Stakes for three-yearold pacers.
