Ultimate Race showing no signs of slowing down as it returns to P.E.I

Teams of two are invited to take part in the Ultimate Race for one day this summer. Former Islander, Wayne Arsenault, is bringing back his Calgary-based company, Ultimate Events, after staging last year’s successful competition. “Teams of two will race around the Island, while solving clues and competing in mental and physical challenges. It’s a great fun-filled day for any fitness level as we always try to make it a happy medium, so don’t be hesitant to register,” said Arsenault. The Ultimate Race is a 19+ event because of the challenges around the Island. Each team is also required to have a vehicle. “The challenges and locations are kept secret as that’s part of the fun, but some examples of last year’s challenges were learning a dance, archery, paddle boarding, and a multitude of puzzles,” explained Arseanault.

The director of athletics and

recreation at UPEI, Chris Hug- gan, and his wife Carolyn were

the winners of last year’s Ultimate Race.

“We are fans of the ‘Amazing Race.’ We applied to go on the first ‘Amazing Race Canada’ back in 2013 and I started Amazing Race-like events at both Colonel Gray and UPEI. And when we heard about the opportunity to participate in an Island version of it, we couldn’t pass it up,” said Huggan.

It’s the teams who determine how competitive they’re going to be.

“Carolyn and I both grew up playing sports and love the combination of being active, being social and competing. This was a fun, challenging way of doing all three,” added Huggan. “Carolyn and I worked well together and had a lot of fun. It helps that we are both quietly competitive, so we don’t get too caught up or too serious.”

The couple got to test what they are made of over the course of the day.

“We found ourselves doing all kinds of fun and unique activities and challenges (from solving clues to shucking oysters and rock climbing), in various communities across the province,” explained Huggan.

The race starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m., on Saturday, July 22.

Racers will be provided a free lunch, as well as prizes for the top teams at the after party.
