Summer reading club time approaches
Research shows school-age children may lose reading skills over the summer months
School is ending and summer is approaching, which means it is time again for the TD Summer Reading Club at libraries across P.E.I.
The TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, all interests, and all abilities. Research has shown that school-age children lose many of their reading skills over the summer months if they do not continue to read while they are out of school. Libraries offer Summer Reading Clubs to ensure children keep reading and have fun doing so.
As of June 1, P.E.I. Libraries no longer charge overdue fees for children’s books which will make summer reading even easier.
The P.E.I. Public Library Service partners with the Centre for Equitable Library Access to ensure students with print disabilities can fully participate in the program. The Provincial TD Summer Reading Club Launch Party will be held at the Kensington Heritage Library on Saturday June 24, at 10 a.m. Students, and even preschoolers, are invited to register at the library for the TD Summer Reading Club.
The Summer Reading Club Launch Party at the Summerside Rotary Library will be on Friday June 30th at 11 a.m. Starting Tuesday July 4th the library will offer free weekly Summer Reading Programs for all ages. The theme for this year is Canada. Summerside Rotary Library will offer free weekly programs for children throughout the Summer.
The schedule includes free programs for children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 on Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Grades 4 to 6 on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., preschoolers on Thursdays at 10 a.m., teens on Thursdays at 1 p.m. and a program for all ages on Saturdays at 10 a.m.
