Interns return to Watermark Theatre for summer
After a successful introductory year, Watermark Theatre in North Rustico will embark on its second year of the mentorship program to continue training young theatre professionals.
The interns started work recently and will be with the company all summer. This year’s crop of interns are: Sarah Hiseler (arts administration), Sydney Gillis (stage management), Pat Caron (technical director), Kira Duff (wardrobe), Carlie Dugan (props and scenic art), and Brayden Crawford (carpentry and tech).
“I’m so excited to have been offered this fantastic opportunity in my home province.
“I can’t wait to share the Island with my talented, new coworkers, and to learn all that I can from them to bring back to my studies at Acadia in the fall,” says P.E.I. intern Sydney Gillis.
Watermark Theatre is a perfect training ground – small enough to nurture and large enough to have processes and policies in place, noted Andrea Surich, general manager of Watermark Theatre. All sets, costumes and props are realized on site and production standards are high. Though there are many theatre training institutions in Canada there are few internships available. Hands-on experience and training under a good mentor is one of the best ways to learn and grow, added Surich.
“After being away in Montreal for school it’s great to be able to return to the Maritimes. I’m excited to be working with such a lovely and talented team of people this summer,” says intern Sarah Hiseler from Nova Scotia.
The program is sponsored by the Joan and Regis Duffy Foundation, the RBC Emerging Artist Project, SYnC Youth Internship Program P.E.I. and Skills P.E.I. Watermark is a member of the Professional Theatre Network of P.E.I.
