Rural beautification competition books now available
For 72 years the P.E.I. Rural Beautification Society has aimed to improve the rural landscape of the Island. Recently, the society launched the 2017 Competition Book and now is in the process of distributing them across the province.
“Our society is full of excitement this time of year,” said executive director Glenn Holmes.
“Last year we worked hard to promote our competitions and we were pleased that entries were up over 30 per cent. We expect this to be another great year with even more entries.”
Competition judges will visit the properties of all the entries and select the overall winners. There are 16 different competitions, with prizes offered in all three counties and the overall winners bringing home provincial awards.
Awards will be handed out at the annual awards dinner set for Oct. 25.
Fifteen thousand dollars in prize money will be awarded over 12 categories.
A returning award is the Reuse-Recycle-Repurpose competition, designed to encourage homeowners to take an old item that might be destined for the landfill and make it shiny and new or turn it into something completely different. “Almost anything can be used,” said Holmes.
“The intention of this award is to save the environment while also challenging Islanders to be creative.” Competition books are available at all Access P.E.I. locations, Veseys Seeds, P.E.I. Women’s Institute-Charlottetown, Belvedere Funeral Home, P.E.I. Potato Board, TIAPEI and Island Waste Management Corporation. Deadline to enter the competitions has been extended to June 30.
