Tall ships act as backdrop for Canada Day celebrations
It will be a sight for sore eyes when four tall ships dock in the Summerside Harbour this Canada Day.
“They’re quite a majestic thing to see up close and personal,” said JP DesRosiers, director of community services for the City of Summerside.
Part of the Canada 150 project, the ships will arrive in Summerside on June 30, serve as a backdrop for Canada Day and then set sail on July 2.
“There will be interactive tours free to the public. You’ll get an up close and personal look at the ships; learn how they work and what those who work on the ships do.
“The tours run from noon until 8 p.m. and are first come first serve, but people should prepare for lines and a possible wait. The area will be busy with Canada Day activities and then the tall ships will add to that.”
In addition, the city has relocated its Canada Day festivities to the board walk area.
“There will be live music, a free barbeque, face painting, bouncy castles and other fun activities throughout the day. And capping off the night will be a fireworks display.”
DesRosiers is looking forward to seeing the community come together for the ships and Canada Day.
“Seeing the younger kids going on these giant boats and having some fun is what I can’t wait for.”
Other tall ships can also be seen in Charlottetown from June 30 to July 2, docked at Port Charlottetown and Queen’s Warf. Supporting vessels HMCS Charlottetown and Canada C3 will also be at Port Charlottetown, along with Québec City cultural performers and the Pirates of Halifax.
Deck tours will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 30 at Port Charlottetown and Queen’s Wharf, with additional deck tours will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. at Port Charlottetown.
On Saturday, July 1, and Sunday, July 2, deck tours will take place at both locations from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
