End of one chapter, start of another

Westisle graduates 144 students

- BY ERIC MCCARTHY

Class valedictorian Megan Keough reminded her fellow Westisle Composite High School graduates Thursday night that time is the one thing they can never get back.

“So make the best out of every moment you have and just be happy.”

Keough and student council president Calvin Murray, who delivered the salutation, shared similar literary analogies. “We are done; done of this chapter of our lives that we wrote together,” said Keough. Now it is each and every one of our turns to go out into the real world and start writing this new chapter of our lives.”

“This day represents the beginning of a new chapter in our lives,” said Murray. “In life, as in literature, every one of our stories will unfold differently, so let’s start the next chapter on a high note.”

He wished his fellow graduates all the best in their future

endeavours.

The 144-member graduating class received nearly $400,000 in scholarships, bursaries and awards, principal Heidi Morgan announced.

Dena McHugh received the final set of awards of the night, topped off with the Governor General’s bronze medal for highest academic standing.

The principal encouraged the students to think about what they had to do in their final year of public education so that they would be properly prepared to enter post-secondary education or the workforce. Morgan shared some accomplishments for their West Prince community, too, suggesting students can learn something

from those accomplishments, including the We the West rallying call when the future of rural schools seemed threatened, the O’Leary Community Sports Centre’s successful Kraft Hockeyville campaign and Mill River’s Beefy Vixen, champion of the Burger Love campaign.

Westisle, she pointed out, is

the hub of all communities that make up West Prince. Regardless of where you end up, don’t forget about the great things that happen in West Prince and all that can be accomplished when individuals put their minds together. “You are capable of accomplishing great things,” Morgan reminded the graduates.
