U.S. church choir to join Fiddlers’ Sons for Monday concert
Fiddlers’ Sons and Keelin Wedge are set to welcome a choir visiting from First Parish Church in Brunswick, Maine. They will perform a special concert together Monday at 8 p.m. at Kaylee Hall, Pooles Corner.
Fiddlers’ Sons will play the first half of the concert and preview material from their soon to be released album — “Fiddlers’ Sons: The Best of Twenty Years.”
First Parish Choir, under the direction of Ray Cornils, will play the second half of the concert.
The adult choir, an 80-voice group, sings a variety of choral literature from Bach to Britten, from plainsong to spirituals. The touring choir will include about 60 singers and 20 nonsingers, who come from varied professions and walks of life. Past concert tours include England and Scotland in 2003; Ireland, Wales & England in 2006; Ecuador in 2009, and Portugal in 2012.
During the First Parish
Church choir’s visit to the Maritimes, they hope to gain a greater understanding of Atlantic Canada and its people, visit regional attractions and sites of historic interests, perform before audiences in acoustically-pleasing and historically significant locations, expand musical experiences and share the joys of singing with partner choirs, and to serve as musical ambassadors from the United States and Maine.
They also strive to provide community service and do local charity work. Conductor Cornils began serving First Parish Church as its director of music in 1987. In 2007, the church celebrated his 20th anniversary and changed his title to minister of music. He directs and oversees the church’s extensive music program of five vocal and two handbell choirs and its more than 150 participants.
The June 26 concert is in the hall at the intersection of Route 3 and 4 near Montague. There will be a 50-50 draw, canteen service and CDs available for sale during intermission. Admission is $15 at the door.
