Community on parade
Miscouche marks bicentennial year with parade on Canada Day
Hundreds of people lined the parade route in Miscouche to celebrate its 200th anniversary in conjunction with Canada turning 150.
Kendall Wright, a member of the organizing group, says the community came together to support a common cause.
“It was an awesome turnout, and nice to see everyone and all the local business.” He added, “It means a lot to me because I grew up in the village and have been here my whole life (27 years), so it’s great to see everyone getting along and supporting each other.”
The parade kicked off Saturday morning with farm tractors, fire trucks, a crane truck, and local businesses handing out candy and ice cream to excited children and adults.
“Preparations for the event began three months ago,” noted Ivan Blanchard, chairman of Miscouche council.
The two-day event included old-fashion games, entertainment, raising a new flag, pancake breakfast at Miscouche Recreation Centre and afternoon barbecue at the same location, concluding with a book launch. “Living in Miscouche we know almost everybody, and it’s important that people know their neighbours because this is a great community,” acknowledged Blanchard. Revellers wearing red and white to support Canada turning 150, back-to-back with Miscouche turning 200, were in full flow enjoying the celebrations. Lori Norton, from Kootenay, B.C., visited P.E.I. for the first time to witness the mark of a milestone year.
“It’s beautiful here. You can feel the community spirit and everyone is so friendly and accepting,” she smiled. “We’ve met a lot of great people.”
