Island youth heads to Uganda
Jade Knockwood part of Atlantic Canadian tour
Seventeen-year-old Jade Knockwood has embarked on a journey she won’t soon forget. As one of four Atlantic Canadian youth, she is representing Prince Edward Island on an 18day tour to Uganda from July 7 to the 23.
Organized by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC), the Mennonite Central Committee and the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation, the ACT 4 Global Change Tour is an opportunity for young Atlantic Canadians to increase their understanding of international co-operation and discover how they can have an impact.
In Uganda, Knockwood will meet with other youth, staff and volunteers from local organizations, and community members to learn more about the work being done in partnership with Atlantic Canadian organizations and their international colleagues. Knockwood is described as a school leader and artist who embraces diversity and advocates for equality for all.
She’s an activist, writer and a traveller who’s excited to bring back her experiences to her community and school.
“I am very excited for this upcoming opportunity to travel to Uganda for two weeks because I get to learn about the culture, the history and as well the community,” says Jade, before embarking on her journey. Upon their return the youth will share their experiences with students and organizations in the Atlantic region this fall and winter, hoping to encourage other young people to become involved in their local and international community.
The youth will also be posting their adventures during their time in Uganda on Instagram using the hashtag #ACICTour. Follow along with www.instagram.com/acic_caci.
