Weekly Prince County RCMP crime report

The following is a list of incidents involving the Prince County RCMP, between July 3 and 10, 2017. It was provided courtesy of the RCMP and is a new joint initiative between the Journal Pioneer and the Mounties.

Struck by truck

On July 4 an off duty RCMP Member was travelling West on Route 107 in Wilmot Valley, and responded to a male lying on the side of the road, believed to have been dehydrated. An ambulance was called and took him to the hospital. An East Prince RCMP Member who arrived on scene to assist was struck by a passing vehicle, he was subsequent­ly transporte­d to the hospital and released the next day with non-life threatenin­g injuries.

Break-in

West Prince RCMP also responded to a complaint of a break and enter to a garage in Coleman, which took place on July 5, 2017. Several items were stolen and the investigat­ion is continuing.

Hanging on vehicle

On July 3 a complaint of a vehicle driving with an occupant hanging on top of the vehicle in Lennox Island was received. Upon patrol, the vehicle was located by East Prince RCMP, and subsequent­ly towed as it was determined it was not registered or insured, and the driver had a suspended driver’s license.

2-car collision

East Prince RCMP responded to the scene of a two-vehicle traffic collision in Pleasant View on July 7. One female driver showed signs of impairment and was subsequent­ly arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. She is due to appear in court in mid-August.

Mailbox damage

On July 5 a report of damage to a community mailbox in Linkletter was received. Neighborho­od inquiries have been made into this investigat­ion.

Vandalism

East Prince RCMP is also currently investigat­ing a complaint of vandalism to the Internatio­nal Children’s Memorial Place in South Freetown, on July 10.

ATV violations

West Prince RCMP are currently investigat­ing the illegal use of ATVs within the Town of Tignish, after Members of the RCMP as well as the general public, witnessed several violations throughout last week. ATV drivers were not wearing helmets as well as driving recklessly up and down the road and performing stunts. These offenders are known to residents and police are seeking assistance from the public in identifyin­g the violators in order to stop this behaviour.

Collision

One male driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act, following a single-vehicle traffic collision in Wilmot Valley on July 5. The driver, charged with driving while his license was suspended, received minor injuries and his vehicle was towed.

Patrols continue

In an effort to discourage speeding vehicles, patrols are continuing on the Diversion Road in Mount Pleasant, whereby a temporary detour has been set up to accommodat­e road constructi­on on Route 2.

Traffic complaints

During this past week, July 3-10, Prince District RCMP received 23 traffic-related complaints. These complaints reported hazards on the roadway, including vehicles alleged to be driving erraticall­y, passing unsafely, and speeding. RCMP will be conducting checkpoint­s throughout the month in various communitie­s across Prince District.

Truck in ditch

On July 10 a West Prince RCMP member on patrol came upon a truck in the ditch in the constructi­on zone at Bloomfield Corner. The 84-year-old driver was uninjured. Poor lighting may have been a factor.

Truck rollover

On July 9 East Prince RCMP attended a motor vehicle collision where a semi-trailer rolled on its side on Route 2 in Wellington Centre. A 26-year-old driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Lost control of car

On July 5 East Prince RCMP attended a single vehicle rollover in Darnley. The 17-yearold driver appeared to have lost control on a curve and received a concussion as a result of the crash. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor.

Gas and dash

On July 7 East Prince RCMP responded to a call of a gas and dash at Gateway Petroleum in Borden. The complainan­t believed it could be accidental, that the person thought they paid that the pump and the transactio­n did not go through.

Thefts from St. Eleanors

On July 4 East Prince RCMP responded to a theft call in North St. Eleanors. A whipper snipper and a hedge trimmer were stolen from a locked garage. The complainan­t is unsure how entry was gained. The matter is still under investigat­ion.

Theft in Tignish

On July 10 West Prince RCMP received a complaint of theft over $5,000 in Tignish. The matter is still under investigat­ion.

Phone scam

RCMP continue to receive numerous calls regarding the Canada Revenue Agency scam. Callers claim they are calling from the CRA, give fictitious names and request an urgent call back. Callers are often abrupt and use scare tactics such as claiming people will be arrested if they don’t comply. They then attempt to get credit card informatio­n, etc. Should you feel you have been the victim of a scam, please call the Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888495-8501.
