Fleet of classic campers will be rolling into Abram-Village

- BY DESIREE ANSTEY

Classic campers from around the Maritime provinces will soon be carving their way to P.E.I. for the Maritime Vintage and Fibreglass Camper Meet.

Karl Proude, from Wellington, calls himself the “Godfather” of the 17th annual three-day event at Abram-Village, which kicks off on Friday, Aug. 4.

“I’m carrying the reins this year, and I hosted the event right back when it started in 2006,” he grinned.

Camper enthusiasts are invited to participate in the gathering, with the goal of promoting the Acadian area and culture, as well as sparking an interest in the vintage homes on wheels. “We hope to meet our goal of 100 vintage, fibreglass trailers, truck campers, motor homes and tear drops,” noted Proude, who also owns a 10-foot vintage Canadian camper built in 1967 that’s equipped with a multifunctional space.

His nostalgic camper, built by the Vanguard company of Richmond, B.C., contains a foldout

table, seats that transform into a bed, plenty of storage space, a gas stove and sink, and a fibreglass drop-down roof that prevents wind drag when out on the open road.

“It’s immaculate for the year,” noted Proude. “I purchased the camper three years ago in Charlo, N.B., and I don’t believe there’s another one of this style in existence.”

This year marks a milestone for his classic Canadian camper.

“It turns 50 this year, so as part

of the event, we will have a Canadian themed ‘Show and Shine’ around the campsite. Prizes will be awarded to the camper decorated with the best Canadian theme,” he said, to acknowledging Canada’s turning 150.

The fun-filled event that includes music, food, and Acadian hospitality is held once every three years in P.E.I. The next one will be New Brunswick. For more information or to book a space contact Proude at: proudecanadian@gmail.com.
