P.E.I and Ontario delegates unite at international 4-H Summit

-

Two Canadian delegates joined forces at the recent Global 4-H Network Summit from July 11 to 14, in Ottawa. The event’s second instalment event featured nearly 500 participants representing 35 countries.

The summit centered around four key themes: community engagement and communications, science and technology, sustainable agriculture and food security, and the environment and healthy living. Sara Gamble of Miscouche acted as P.E.I.’s delegate. She said it was an honour to represent the province on an international stage, while Karen Cavanagh from Toledo represented Ontario.

“To say we were excited to represent our provinces and network with other global members is an understatement,” said Gamble.

Chris Koch, one of the guest speakers at the summit was the most memorable for Gamble and Cavanagh.

Koch, born without arms or legs, in a small farming community, was raised to make the best of situations. Other speakers included, Krista Scaldwell, vice-president of communications, Great-West Life; Ann Makonsinkski, inventor and founder of Makotronics; Krysta Harden, vice president of public policy and chief sustainability officer, DuPont Co.; and Canadian Olympian Cristy Nurse. They drew on points like beings exposed to public speaking at a young age, conversing with judges and the ability to interact with others in various situations.

The summit provided opportunities for delegates to make many connections with members and leaders from around the world, business professionals, keynote and motivational speakers.

“As the week drew to an end, we realized how 4-H can bring the world together and what new skills and experiences we could bring back to our local 4-H clubs,” said Cavanagh.
