Prince County RCMP incident report from July 14 to 21

Incidents include a driver being blinded during a turn, fraudulent­ly bought bridge passes, collisions and thefts

Editor’s note: The following is a list of noteworthy incidents and investigat­ions undertaken by Prince District RCMP on Prince Edward Island between July 14 and 21.

Two-vehicle collision in Kelly’s Cross

On July 15 at about 12:20 p.m., East Prince RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the corner of Route 13 and Route 146 in Kelly’s Cross. Three people were taken to hospital. One driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

Cars rummaged through in Miscouche

In the overnight hours of Friday, July 14, several vehicles on Wilfred Street in Miscouche were rummaged through. Money was stolen from one vehicle. Also in Miscouche, a wallet was stolen from a vehicle on Kelly Drive. The wallet was later recovered but money and gift cards were missing.

Quad stolen from Wet Point

Sometime overnight on July 17, a green Suzuki King Quad all-terrain vehicle was stolen from a property in West Point.

Dirt bike stolen from Twin Shores

Sometime between the evening of July 13 and the afternoon of July 14, a 2006 Honda CRF 50 dirt bike was stolen from a site at Twin Shores Campground.

Two vehicles steal gas from same Kinkora store

On July 16 at about 7:30 p.m., a male left the Big Dog Corner Store in Kinkora without paying for his fuel. He was identified and was contacted by police. On July 17 a motorcycli­st pulled up to the pumps at the Big Dog Corner Store. The driver left without paying for the fuel. This last incident is still under investigat­ion.

Speed demon charged near Miscouche

On July 16, at about 7:45 a.m., a motorcycle was clocked at 151km/hr on Route 2 in Miscouche. The 33-year-old driver was subsequent­ly charged with driving while suspended, speeding, expired registrati­on and no insurance. The motorcycle was towed.

Light shone into pilots’ eyes

Around midnight on July 15, East Prince RCMP responded to a call of a green laser light that had been shone into the cockpit of a Canadian Coast Guard aircraft during an exercise. The light affected the pilot’s vision. The nearest land locations indicated by the crew were investigat­ed. The air crew was grounded until they could be evaluated by a doctor. The person responsibl­e were not found.

Spot checks carried out in Borden-Carleton

On July 14, at approximat­ely 9 a.m., and again later in the afternoon, at approximat­ely 1:30 p.m., RCMP conducted two separate checkpoint­s in Borden-Carleton. The check stop was created to check for seatbelt and cell phone usage, and approximat­ely 45 vehicles were checked. No tickets were issued under the Highway Traffic Act, as a result of these checkpoint­s.

Property damaged by St. Lawrence

On July 16, a complaint was received by police reporting damage to property in St. Lawrence. The damage is believed to have taken place sometime between July 15 and 16. The matter has been documented and is still under investigat­ion.

ATV accident in Montrose

On July 15 at about 9:30 p.m., police attended the scene of an accident in Montrose, involving an ATV. One person was injured, and the investigat­ion is continuing.

Gas stolen from Mount Royal

On July 14, a complaint was received by police reporting damage to a lock and chain, as well as theft of gasoline, from a warehouse in Mount Royal. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime on July 3.

Fraudulent bridge passes sold

A few fraudulent transactio­ns were reported on July 20. The first one was a transfer of $3,000 from an account of a member of the Tignish Credit Union. The second one pertains to the fraudulent purchase of Confederat­ion Bridge passes. It appears the bridge passes were purchased fraudulent­ly and sold on Kijiji.

Driver blinded

On July 20, 2017, the driver of a vehicle in Glenwood was blinded by a laser light as he was rounding a sharp turn. The driver believes the light came from the vehicle he was meeting. No suspects have been identified.

Potato truck rolled over

On July 20 at approximat­ely 5:30 p.m., East Prince RCMP responded to a vehicle rollover on the Wilmot Valley Road. The load of potatoes shifted, which caused the vehicle to overturn. The driver not injured.

Spot check in Tignish

On July 21, West Prince RCMP conducted check stops in Tignish. A total of 150 vehicles were checked which resulted in four charges and 10 warnings.

Damage to Children’s Memorial Place

In the overnight hours of July 22, damage was done to the Internatio­nal Children’s Memorial Place in South Freetown. Photos were taken and beer cans were seized. The matter is still under investigat­ion.

Traffic complaints

During this past week, Prince District RCMP received 30 traffic-related complaints. The complaints mostly pertained to vehicles alleged to be driving erraticall­y, passing unsafely, and speeding.

RCMP will be conducting checkpoint­s throughout the month in various communitie­s across the district.

Extra patrols requested

East Prince RCMP received a request for extra patrols for Route 20 in New London. As there is increased traffic during the summer months, speeding vehicles have become an issue. Members will be patrolling the area. Reminder Motorists are reminded to be vigilant in watching for pedestrian­s, people riding bikes, especially at crosswalks and intersecti­ons.
