Mosquito AAA Chevys capture prestigiou­s tournament in Charlottet­own

The Summerside Chevys capped a busy weekend in fine style.

The Chevys posted an impressive 5-1 (won-lost) record en route to winning the prestigiou­s 13th annual Fiddler MacDonald Memorial mosquito AAA baseball tournament in Charlottet­own last weekend.

The event featured 12 teams from across the Maritimes playing in the 11-and-under age group.

After playing three roundrobin games on Friday and Saturday, the Chevys registered three solid victories in Sunday’s playoff round.

The Chevys blanked the MidIsle Cougars 5-0 in the quarterfin­als, trimmed the Hammonds Plains A’s 12-2 in a four-inning semifinal game, and defeated the Port City Pirates 8-1 in the championsh­ip match.

The Chevys, who went 2-1 in the round robin, entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed.

Chevys 5 Cougars 0

Denver Arsenault’s complete game on just 53 pitches stifled Mid-Isle’s offence. Arsenault also chipped in with a two-run single to help his own cause.

Seth Bulger and Skyler Arsenault each contribute­d two hits to the Chevys’ attack.

Chevys 12 A’s 2

The bats were firing on all cylinders as Summerside punched its ticket to the championsh­ip game with a mercyrule victory.

Bulger, Arsenault, George Gallant and Brandon Smith all had two hits in the win.

Chevys 8 Pirates 1

Smith pitched a complete game to earn the victory in the championsh­ip game.

He allowed just one run on six hits while striking out four batters and throwing a total of 67 pitches.

Gallant, the Chevys’ leadoff hitter, sparked the offence by going 3-for-3 and scoring a run. Smith, Griffin Ryan and Cole Echlin each chipped in with two-hit efforts.
